Business turnover jumps 2.9% in July

Australian business turnover jumped 2.9 per cent in July 2025 in seasonally adjusted terms, the strongest monthly rise since May 2022, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Robert Ewing, ABS head of business statistics, said: ‘The rise was the largest since May 2022, with growth in turnover seen across all industries.’

‘The Electricity, gas, water and waste division grew 15.8 per cent due to a surge in wholesale electricity and gas prices. This division is now at a record high, breaking the previous record set in August 2022.’

‘Other notable industry rises were in Professional, scientific and technical services, up 4.6 per cent, Manufacturing 4.2 per cent and Construction 3.8 per cent.’

Across the month, arts and recreation services rose 3.2 per cent, other services 2.7 per cent, accommodation and food services 2.5 per cent, transport, postal and warehousing 2.0 per cent, wholesale trade 1.5 per cent, mining 1.5 per cent, administrative and support services 1.3 per cent, and both retail trade and information media and telecommunications 1.0 per cent, ABS figures show.

On an annual basis, business turnover was 6.3 per cent higher than in July 2024, with 12 of the 13 industries up, according to the ABS. The largest gains were in Electricity, gas, water and waste services (+16.2 per cent) and Manufacturing (+13.2 per cent), while Mining was the only industry to fall (-1.7 per cent).

In trend terms, the 13‑industry aggregate edged up 0.3 per cent in July.

The ABS’s Monthly business Turnover Indicator is derived from Australian Taxation Office business Activity Statement data from monthly remitters and primarily covers businesses with annual GST turnover of $20 million or more, providing a timely complement to quarterly measures.
