The Australian Law Reform Commission has welcomed the appointment of Michelle Rowland MP as Commonwealth Attorney-General, with its president, the Hon Justice Mordy Bromberg, signalling a readiness to work with her while paying tribute to her predecessor, the Hon Mark Dreyfus KC MP.
“The Commission congratulates Ms Rowland on her appointment to the role of Commonwealth Attorney-General, Australia’s first law officer. The ALRC offers valuable expertise and recommendations to government on reforming Australian law through its inquiries and reports, and I look forward to working with the Attorney-General and her department to modernise and improve the law.”
Justice Bromberg also thanked the outgoing Attorney-General, adding: “I want to thank former Attorney-General the Hon Mark Dreyfus KC MP for his contribution to the law over decades. His substantial legacy as Attorney-General should be recognised and celebrated, including his contribution to revitalising the ALRC.”
The ALRC, Australia’s independent law reform agency, conducts inquiries referred by the Attorney-General. Marking its 50th anniversary this year, the Commission is in the midst of one of its largest programmes of work, including reviews of the future acts regime in native title law, surrogacy laws and human tissue laws.
Rowland, the federal member for Greenway, enters the portfolio after serving as Minister for Communications in the Albanese government.
Dreyfus served as Attorney-General from 2022, with the Commission highlighting his role in strengthening the ALRC’s work.
